History

By the turn of the century, the community had grown into an important shipping center for lumber and livestock with mills, brickyards, cotton gins, hotels and general stores as well as its own newspaper: The Courier.

In 1968, the San Jacinto River Authority started work on Lake Conroe – a water supply reservoir built along the west fork of the San Jacinto River and completed in January of 1973 – sparking an immediate population boom that resulted in the creation of its inaugural city council and mayor.
