1. Monterrey – Portland Timbers
Today in Providence Park is an intriguing matchup in the MX League Championship Tournament. Monterrey currently finds themselves amongst 16 final contenders and looks poised to advance further toward its end goal.
CF Monterrey had an excellent start, beating Real Salt Lake 2-0 before going on to defeat Seattle Sounders 4-2 with difficulty. Boli and Moreno provided great link play but without results as 17 shots on target were missed by them; just three were scored upon.
Hector Moreno must do much better if the Timbers want to advance to the next round. As a defender, Moreno needs to show more bravery in his challenges and distribution should also improve greatly. On Friday, August 4th at 10:00 (8:00 pacific), CF Monterrey will face Portland Timbers in what has been dubbed as “The Clasico of 2023” at Providence Park Stadium. Apple TV, MLS Season Pass and TUDN will provide coverage of this matchup.
Monterrey have breezed into the knockout rounds of Leagues Cup with ease thanks to two dominant victories in their initial group matches and are considered a strong candidate to reach its ultimate conclusion.
The Portland Timbers, on the other hand, have struggled. After finishing Leagues Cup group stage play as runners-up in West 2, Portland will need to face Monterrey in an elimination match in one-game play-offs for any chance of early exiting from tournament. Although Portland have experience competing in such competitions and should prevail over Monterrey comfortably enough; their players will still need to be at top form to advance past this round and avoid another early departure from tournament action.
3. Monterrey – Portland Timbers
Tomorrow morning at 22:00:00 GMT on August 5th 2023 CF Monterrey will face Portland Timbers in an Eliminator Cup Match at Providence Park Stadium and this matchup will be streamed live via MLS Season Pass (Apple TV).
El Rayados were on their game and cruised past the Timbers with one goal from Mexican Maximiliano Meza to seal victory, using this last-ditch offensive push as part of their comeback win.
